Author's Introduction[]
"I very much enjoyed the HBS Battletech game, it captured the feel of the setting in my view, especially with a few of the lore friendly mods. As I played I couldn't help noticing there were a couple of pretty obvious 'what if' moments that could really have changed the wider setting, especially if the player character had a bit more leeway in his actions. So the idea for this story slowly germinated around those, it is roughly based on the game in terms of the background, with some modest changes to reflect my personal opinion that mercenaries who own and maintain the equivalent of a main tank battle tank are probably going to have to come from relatively wealthy backgrounds and be paid accordingly, hence the main character is intended to be reflective of the likely background of a lot of the aristocratic mercenary mechwarrior class. Lore wise I have endeavored to be faithful and accurate, using existing characters and locations where possible. With that said there is a tiny bit of tweaking of character ages and dates. The main character Edmund Blackadder is the 'player character', so effectively an OC, but otherwise the reader will find almost all of the names recognisable."
"The earliest chronological part of the story is the HBS starting point, however it is not a mission-by-mission story (nor are the ones mentioned particularly similar to the ones in the game) and swiftly moves on to explore the impact of the changes wrought and the later conflicts. The time frame covers the 3025 era and the Clan invasion era, and importantly the story is complete. It is posted on AH.com and Spacebattles, the latter being better proof-read."
"I have assumed some familiarity on the part of the reader with the lore, and the story arcs overlap with a number of the books. However the last threadmark is an appendix which gives a brief summary of the lore - and gives a steer as to how the early characters might have seen themselves and their surroundings. Sarna.net gives rather more detail, and was regularly used as a source."
