Story[]
A Mining Town in the Periphery
August 3027
A Catapult, a Thunderbolt, a Jaegermech, and an Atlas.
Altogether it was a formidable lance. Comstar thought so also. Their mission was simple: wanton destruction. Their target: a Mining Town. The only piece of civilization for literal light years.
Holy Shroud III was still in effect. And to deny the Scavenger Lords the vital minerals to produce their advanced equipment was a high priority.
The militia had fled. No weapon in their arsenal could turn back the most advanced Battlemechs ROM could employ. Instead they hurried themselves evacuating what they could, who they could., buying what time they could with blood and metal. But it would not be enough to save them.
Blake willed that this tree be ripped out, root and stem. Nothing but ashes and bleached bones would remain. The same would be happening across dozens of other worlds to deny the Cameron and the Scavenger Lords the resources to challenge the Blessed Order.
Together the Lance stomped into the middle of town, unopposed by the cowering townsfolk. No one dared face them.
He was an Errant, a lone MechWarrior hired to defend a world. If it was an Assault he piloted then maybe he would have, could have, had a chance. But right now he was in a humble Stinger without a single Laser or even a Machine Gun mounted on its frame.
Yet what gave the Lance pause was the dozens of wrecks at the Errant's feet. Their vanguard force of Mobile Dolls, originally tasked to soften up what stood for this world's defenders and to chase down any runners. They would have left the bulk of the Drones but the Errant had defeated them. Somehow.
The Lance Commander bellowed out a challenge: exit the Mech and he would be spared. It was a lie of course. They just wanted to make the kill easier.
The Stinger did not answer. It just stared back at them. The cockpit 'eye' seethed red, seeming lit with an ethereal flame. On the Stinger's back, a large cape fluttered in the howling wind. The Errant reached behind his back and gripped a handle jutting out under the cape. Before all their eyes he drew a sword as long as the Stinger was tall. Unarmed it was not.

JagerMech Heavy 'Mech
The trigger-happy Jagermech pilot fired but it was too late. The Stinger disappeared in a blur, reappearing past the minimum range of the AA mech and with a hard metal clang the Heavy shook and fell over.
The rest of the lance retaliated, filling the space around the Stinger with fire and death.
But as the dust cleared the Stinger remained untouched with a sword that still smoked from the munitions it had blocked.
It crouched ... then lept, dodging a sweep of a dozen lasers. The Stinger twisted in the air, just missing a barrage of missiles before its feet landed hard upon the cockpit of the Catapult before using the now headless mech as a springboard.
With another swing the sword crashed into the armored skull of the Atlas, cracking it open like an egg.

Thunderbolt Heavy 'Mech
The last mech, the Thunderbolt, stumbled back, no longer sure of victory. In a panic the MechWarrior unleashed all his weapons annihilating anything but his foe. His ammo bins ran empty, his lasers glowed hot.
With a speed unseen in any mech the Stinger shot out from the dust.
All the Blaklist felt was a sudden wave of force slam into him.
...Then nothing.
As for the Thunderbolt it still stood with arms slack and its Fusion Engine sputtering before finally falling silent. The Stinger wrenched out the sword embedded in the core of the Heavy Battlemech, letting the machine fall to its knees and collapse in a heap.
The Errant studied the lance he had just defeated before sheathing his broadsword.
Words of thanks began to fill his ear by thankful townsfolk and celebrating militia., but he paid no heed to the praise.
Far from the Great Houses and even the Junkers much of the Periphery was still threatened by ComStar's insanity.
This world, just like the last, was threatened by mechanical monsters unleashed by madmen. And just like his world there were those rising up to stop them. This was not his story. His legend had came and went. Here in the frontier he was just one of many Errants doing their part, taking up arms against the distant tyrants.
But Agnika Kieru didn't mind saving the occasional town or two ... and picking up a couple students along the way...
Finish
- Author's Note : A short sidestory inspired by Gundam Marchosias' duel with Harael. This also covers just one front of the conflict: The edge of the Periphery where Errants and other local forces clash with Blakist agents.
As an addendum to the author's note: by no means is it a stock Stinger. It's why the Thunderbolt pilot panicked.
A Stinger could not have possibly dismantled three heavies and an assault. A Stinger could not move so fast or strike so precisely.
'The cockpit 'eye' seethed red, seeming lit with an ethereal flame'
'With a speed unseen in any mech the Stinger shot out from the dust.'
