"You sat with Silent Annie for a couple hours on the hull, what were you two talking about?" Lieutenant Nelson asked.
"Ship-spotting." Boothe said.
"Wrong place to stargaze with a pretty girl, Sergeant." the Elltee said, "But, props for initiative. You teach her anything?"
"She..." he hesitated, "...it went well, sir. I think she appreciated the company."
"Well, your ears aren't bleeding, so there's that. There's worse jobs than teaching one of those backwaters how to spot a drive plume."<br>
You have no idea "Yes sir." How is it you don't see it, sir? he wanted to ask, She knows more about this than you do with your Academy education.
"You planning to submit your navigation exam?" Lt. Nelson asked.
"When I'm ready, sir. I've got some credit work to do still on the correspondence course."
"Need a hand?" Nelson asked.
Not from you. "I've...I've arranged for some study help, sir. I'll be ready to sit for the exams next month."
"See that you are. With a mind like yours, you can't stay a deck monkey for your entire career."
"Yes sir."
