Chapter 28 - The Wind at my Back, Stars at my feet[]

Sick bed, troop bay...

IV fluids to replenish the lost water in her body, vitamin supplements and mineral supplements to replace lost trace minerals, and Amanda was almost starting to feel human again after three hours.

"Nine seconds." Diamh said, "Ngo, I'm going to screw you over big time."

"Mum?"

"Nine second window, not even a scrape off the paint. I'm signing off your Guild Certification, you did Pathfinder's-work there."

"What would've happened if I got it wrong?"

"Core would've gone into shutdown." the Skipper said, "That's if you got it wrong on the high side, on the low-side, we'd be half-wrecked coming out in the wrong point...question is, can you do it again?"

"Do I have to?"

"It's your option." Sam told her, "There are any number of ways being able to do that again could come in handy, but I get it if you don't want the side-effects again."

"I'll do it again." Amanda said, "I saw something weird in the dream, Skipper. I was...I was Trau Tran Ngo, and I was with Phil Jennings and Sarah Crowe, planning it...planning how our ancestors escaped Terra the first time."

"Was it what you imagined?" Sam asked.

Amanda shook her head, "No...he...I...was so nervous, so angry...and so afraid of being caught."

Sam laid a hand on her shoulder, "Then it was a real dream." she told her. "You need to shake the dirt off your boots for good, Ngo. You don't belong trapped around a Well."
