Description[]
The SWD-3D Swordsman is a resurrection of standard Medium weight BattleMech, This redesign, first pioneered by the Marksman mercenary group, ended up using many components from the reintroduced Toro. Cooperation between Warworks and Duran Metals and Manufacturing allowed both to share ideas and improvements across designs and to develop the Swordsman and the Veritas rapidly simultaneously.
This is a Succession Wars era variant. It was created by fan writer, MarkWarrior, for his fan book Blood on the Horizon.
History[]
Background[]
The Swordsman was an early Federated Suns medium BattleMech, initially built in 2463 with Primitive Technology. The Swordsman was authorized by First Prince James Davion upon his ascendance to the throne of House Davion. As the Federated Suns' third in-house designed BattleMech, it was created to be an inexpensive design for production in large numbers to bolster the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns. At the time of its commission, the AFFS's ranks were laden with heavier designs. This design wasn't as capable and so fell by the wayside in the modern era. Later revived in 3011 during the 3rd Succession War, the newly improved and redesigned Swordsman was produced in large numbers and sold across the Federated Suns, Lyran Commonwealth, and Taurian Concordat.
Deployment[]
The Swordsman was purchased and used by the Capellan March Militia units and wasn't intended for use on the front lines. However, losses taken in the advances of 3020 quickly changed that, and many units deployed it in place of Shadow Hawks and Wolverines as a leader of light lances.
Armament and Equipment[]
Mark Hull first broached the Modernized Swordsman to Countess Durand of the planet Pierce in 3007. While not put into production until early 3011, the Medium 'Mech quickly became popular among militia units for its versatility and ease of maintenance.[1]
Designed as a brawler, the 'Mech primary gun which the forebarer carried, the AC/5 is removed in favor for a Large Laser. Additionally, while remaining medium lasers and 4-tubed Short Range Missile Launchers remain, the small laser is deleted to allow for weight to increase armor protection to 8 tons. Three Jump Jets are added giving it more tactical options in combat, but similarly giving it a limited 90 meter range like the Shadow Hawk.
