Description[]
In the face of flexibly modular 'Mechs of fielded by the Clans, rose the Swayback Medium OmniMech.
While omnitechnology isn’t the first priority for the Inner Sphere’s efforts to catch up with Clans, it is high on the list and there are at least a dozen projects across the Inner Sphere making the attempt to replicate omnimechs.
Without the strain of fighting an active war against the Clans, the Free Worlds League had the financial reserves to put into its major corporations’ efforts, as well as the leverage to obtain samples of Clan equipment from their neighbors so it was no great surprise that the key breakthroughs were made in the League.
The Inner Sphere's first production omnimech is based heavily on the Hunchback and despite several attempts at a ‘more marketable name’ it was so inevitably referred to as the Swayback Omni that KaliYama execs yielded to the inevitable. In order to cope with recoil problems found in previous attempts to fit a Gauss Rifle and to adapt the advanced chassis technologies circulated in the form of the Hippogriff, the Hunchback chassis was scaled up by five tons but it is otherwise easy to mistake for the original design.
Deployment[]
The Swayback arrived in production just in time to miss contracts (if not demands) from the other Successor States, and thus is mostly found in the FWLM. The Wolf Dragoons’ technical assistance has been repaid with some access, and in some cases they have made orders on behalf of associated mercenary units. This timing hasn’t endeared KaliYama and by extension the rest of the Free Worlds League to the rest of the Star League and only the commitment of numerous Swaybacks to the FWLM regiments being sent to fight the Clans is keeping the inevitable espionage efforts from causing havoc as the other Great Houses seek to obtain the technology behind the Swayback for themselves.
The Mech design was created by Drakensis for his fan story Opalescent Reflections.
Armaments and Equipment[]
The Swayback manages what is considered minimum speed for the modern medium 'mech, adequate armor and impressive firepower. Almost all the omnipods fit entirely into the side torsos, primarily the right torso, and the arm lasers are fixed in place. Armor protection is only slightly improved over the original, but since the Hunchback was already quite sturdy there have been no complaints about the durability of the Swayback.
The advanced heatsinks can dissipate the heat of most of the standard configurations. Sometimes it’s far more than is needed, although the Prime Configuration is a noted exception with the pair of Extended Range PPCs fitted into the torso. The Prime needing additional cooling, would be fitted out 3 additional Double Heat Sinks fitted in the pods, to compliment the 11 Double Heat Sinks nominally mounted in the Cortek 275 Rated Fusion Engine.
Most of the other configurations are based on known Hunchback variants and designated as such rather than purely sequential. This has left gaps in the list that may be filled at a later date, depending on KaliYama’s marketing department, or possibly mechwarrior feedback.
Alternate Configurations[]
- SWB-OA
- The A Configuration is a sniper, right torso carries a Gauss Rifle in the place of the original Hunchback’s autocannon. Left torso is fitted with 2 tons of Gauss Rifle Ammunition. BV2: 1509
- SWB-OG
- Intended as a close combat machine like classic Hunchback, The G Configuration is armed with a standard Class 20 Autocannon. The autocannon has 3 tons of ammunition in the left torso Pod mounted ammo bin. BV2: 1,236.
- SWB-OH
- Mid-Range Brawler, the H Config is fitted with a Class 10 Autocannon with three additional Medium Lasers in it's right torso, while ammunition is feed from it's left torso ammo bin. BV2: 1,320
- SWB-OJ
- Fire Support Configuration, with LRM 20 with Artemis IV Fire Control to give additional accuracy. Additional 3 Medium Lasers are also fitted in the right torso with the launcher. The launcher's 3 tons of ammunition placed in it's left torso ammo bins. BV2: 1,483
- SWB-OP
- Call back the Hunchback's all energy load of it's "swayback" variant, the HBK-4P, the P Configuration is fitted with Six Medium Pulse Lasers in the right torso to compliment it's Fixed arm mounted lasers. To help manage the heat load, 5 additional Double Heat Sinks fitted in arms and the side torsos in the OmniPods nearly keep the 'Mech moderately cool. BV2: 1,355
- SWB-OSP
- Close-range brawler, it's fitted with SRM 6 Launcher, with 3 tons of NARC guided ammunition. The NARC launcher is fitted in the right torso pod space with five additional Medium Lasers. Six rounds of NARC homing pods ammo is placed in the left torso pod mounted ammo bin. BV2: 1,421
