Overview[]

The Svalinn-Class Light Cruiser is a replacement design created by Clan Snow Raven part of the fleet restoration plan set in the Zhukov AU.

  • Additionally
The ship was also introduced as part of the Alternate Timeline with Thanks fan story universe by Dragon Cat, whom created the background for the ship, Ship was originally designed by Steve Cross aka marauder648. History presented in this article only pretains to the Zhukov AU Ships.

Deployment[]

One of the biggest goals of the NELSON Project was not just the improvement of existing vessels but the construction of newer vessels for the future. It was clear that the extant ships wouldn't last forever, especially the older types like the Aegis class Heavy Cruisers. The new Typhon Destroyers would replace the old Essex II and Lola IIIs, while the Nightlord would replace the old battleships. Still, something was missing: a ship that would occupy the spot between the destroyers and the “real” heavy cruisers. At first the Khans, the Admiralty, and the Scientist Caste considered restarting the production of either the Island or Mountain Frigates or the Belfast Light Cruisers for which they had all the specifications, but they didn't have the capacities to make the KF Cores and weapons necessary for those designs. After doing some research, however, the Scientists found a good source for KF Cores: the old Aegis-class Heavy Cruisers of which the Ravens had quite a large number. Many of them were worn out, but the KF Cores only needed some reconditioning, so it was decided to proceed with a 750.000-ton vessel which would reuse the reactors and some of the weapons of Aegis while sourcing other equipment from a stricken McKenna-class Battleship and decommissioned Potemkin Transport Cruisers. The first ship of the class, the CSR Svalinn, was turned over to the Warrior Caste in early 3005.

Weapons and Capacities[]

The Svalinn’s 750.000-ton weight gave the Scientists a good amount tonnage to work with. The new Light Cruiser’s frame was a bit more reinforced than the Aegis’s, allowing it to carry more armor. Clad in over 1000 tons of Lamellor Ferro-Carbide, it sported protection rarely found on a light cruiser, which allowed it to survive even heavy naval engagements intact. Only the cruiser’s rear armour was a bit on the thin side, although this was changed on later ships of the class. The ship’s main guns were a dozen Super-Heavy Naval Autocannons, all sourced from old Aegis Cruisers.

This made the Svalinn especially dangerous at close ranges, giving it an edge over the unmodified vessels used by other Clans, and while dangerous at close ranges, it was equally strong at longer ranges. Its other main weapons were 12 Heavy Naval PPCs, of which eight were mounted in two quad turrets in the ship’s bow. A single salvo from these turrets could devastate almost everything up to cruiser-size with ease. On the first ships, these guns came mainly from the heavily damaged McKenna-class Battleship SLS Hindenburg, which had been used by the Ravens as a source for spare parts to keep the CSR James McKenna running. Other long-range weapons were four Medium Naval PPCs on the broadsides and fourteen 45cm Naval Lasers which were coupled to state-of-the-art anti-fighter targeting systems. For additional anti-fighter protection, the ship also carried a mixture of ER PPCs and ER Large and Pulse Lasers in turrets around the hull, as well as the obligatory batteries of Anti-Missile Systems to defend it from Capital Missiles.

Another important feature was the new transit drive system. The 1.5Gs of acceleration of the Aegis had been clearly too slow, so the new Lum Engine Works L4000 transit engines were chosen, propelling the Svalinn to a much more suitable acceleration of 2.5Gs. The Admiralty also demanded a large hangar for OmniFighters, so the Svalinn had enough space for three Stars of these machines, and it included launch catapults and a proper landing and recovery deck, something one would normally find on Battleships or dedicated carrier vessels. Another hangar carried five small craft, mainly the Ravens’ own advanced Moa. Like most Clan WarShips, the Svalinn also featured Lithium-Fusion Batteries for improved strategic mobility and a Mobile HPG System for fast, long-range communication with distant planets.
