Chapter 37 - Important People[]
Tharkad System
Lyran Commonwealth
November, 3097
[Overview: Tharkad system...]
The lone LCN destroyer accelerated immediately. Behind it, within seconds..were two more. Followed by two more, followed by two more, roughly ten seconds apart. The destroyer group of 12 had emerged from the L-1 point, spreading out into a wall of battle, and then, the cutters began to appear.
Meanwhile, the Republic's Fox-class Corvettes released Dropships. Half were clearly military transports and began their burn for the planet. While the rest were types of DropShips were first seen in service of Word of Blake, like their Pocket Warships designs.
As they did so, space rippled. The individual mass of objects creates the lagrange points. Between a star and the object in question, the L-1 point.
Cutters emerged from hyperspace with waves of electromagnetic interference right on top of the invading fleet. They angled to begin scything in any given direction. Twelve, then twenty four, then thirty six in number.
Two-to-one superiority over the pocket warships and armed with significant firepower, the cutter screen slashed through the victorist/Republic fleet in a pass that left Dropships destroyed and pocket warships burst and burning, before turning and burning.
The Cutters were cut down by the warships with near ludicrous ease, but the invasion force's vanguard had been gutted.
THIS was the Republic's play. Taking sides in a dynastic struggle with allies on the ground and inside the LCAF's armed services when it looked like the straight political play in the Estates General wasn't going to win the ratification without the Archon's support. They chose to remove and replace the Archon with one who would do as he was told.
The cutters were not marked with Lyran blue, and neither were more than half the Destroyers.
More is the pity...for the attackers.
Five Light Years away....a two kilometer ring in a system that never served life, pulsed open again. More ships flowed through, heading for a jump point leading to the Tharkad system...
