Physical Description[]
Mix Vietnamese descent, having "Asian" oval eyes. She in some version of the story her story she has dark skin. This is due her Philippians heritage her people of Kowloon have from those early settlers.
Biography[]
Note: This bio is based on her primary stories, which seldom changes her origin. As side stories are added however her background changes. However this bio is principally same for her main timelines.
Early History[]
Daughter of David and Allison Ngo, Elizabeth Ngo was born the youngest of three children, at a military hospital in the Lyran Commonwealth. With both parents in the military at the time, she and her brothers were sent to live with their Grandfather, the late Duke of Kowloon, at the outset of the war of '39. (She was all of two, and did not live with her parents again until the age of nine). Elizabeth was a clever child, but being third out of three, with two strong and healthy siblings. She was not set to inherit the Ducal title, though she was granted at age four the title 'Baroness of the Boojum belts' by her Grandfather. A gift reflecting the young Elizabeth's keen interest in both science, and star-gazing.
This may well have been the richest inheritance given the children by their Grandfather. As for Henry, was only given the Barony of Hue. While Patrick was set to inherit pretty much the whole system as Duke upon his completed tour in the Lyran Armed forces. (Projected to occur in 3054).
At the age of Eleven, Elizabeth, now living with her mother on Donegal, where she was caught in possession of narcotics. Medical examinations and a gene-marker scan revealed she inherited the family's 'curse', she was born with Cholmann's syndrome. AFFC doctors projected her total lifespan to reach roughly age 31 or 32. This resulted in her paperwork being per-preemptively flagged with LCAF and AFFC as "Medically unsuitable for Military Service in Perpetuity".
Ascending into throne of the Kowloon[]
IN the majority of Ngoverse stories, Elizabeth employs a mixture of Legalities and a solid case for abuse of office in removing the Regent appointed to Kowloon by the Lyran government while her Father continued his military career. In the majority of timelines, Elizabeth manages the final act of this, by publicly and personally executing the man in a move to pre-empt and prevent rioting and civil disorder...a move that works among her own people, but creates a bit of a poor reputation for her among Lyrans outside the Kowloon system.
It is important to understand that it is not so much that she removed the man for embezzlement and abuse of office, nor that she both sentenced him to death. It's that she did it herself instead of delegating the task.
At fifteen years old, with a handgun she was barely strong enough to hold at the time.
- Multi-verse Note: Notably, in one timeline, she doesn't kill him, but instead hands him over to the courts at the urging of her mentor Margaret Doons.
Mid Career Ages 16 - 20[]
Upon taking over control of her inheritance and asserting her position as Duchess, Elizabeth set about implementing a number of economic reform programs to reverse a decades long economic slide on Kowloon. This included the usual lifting of domestic taxes, implementing low-interest loans to encourage the starting or expansion of businesses, and easing of various regulations and red-tape. It also included a lavish bout of investment into Kowloon's space and ground infrastructure of the sort not seen in centuries, and an expansion of the planetary defense forces following a strict diet of simplify, standardize, mass produce.
rinse, and repeat until prosperity takes hold. Massive investments in local education saw the construction of libraries and printing centers to push as many textbooks, technical manuals, and academic texts as could be found, and the hiring of academics across the Commonwealth, including many that had been 'blackballed' by universities for their political views or questionable behaviors.
In 3055, Elizabeth officially moved the ducal residence from the Rim-Worlds Era fortified complex in Nha Tranh (Kowloon's Capital) to a split level two story house in a suburb of the capital city. The old Ducal complex was repurposed to serve as a University, and she placed the dedication marker over the gate:
"We have lost so much knowledge we no longer know what we have forgotten. This must change."
Notably, Nha Tranh university joined a small number of such establishments in the Inner Sphere where a university education is available, but not officer or military training.
She also established a sort-of-Academy using military members and guest lecturers from her university at Giap Island, Vin Drin Lap, and Spider Moon, the three major militia bases. It was at this time, that she began pouring money into fully developing a space-based economy with attendant resources to construct and repair Jumpships and Dropships. Her firm (Ngo Industries) was already the largest industrial toolmaker in the Commonwealth, and had been grown from a salvage operation in the 29th century. (only coming out as a manufacturer in the last few years).
The 'Black Duchess' (Media term) had turned her homeworld's economy around, and was building up capabilities...while staying within a planetary budget considered small by most Lyran standards. (Military spending making up only a net average of 2-2.5% of planetary GDP, a fraction of a fraction of what similar worlds in the region were spending for significantly less returns.)
In 3056, Duchess Ngo was formally compelled to report to Tharkad to swear Fealty. This was, in many ways, her 'debut' to Society, her formal introduction. It was noted at the time, that she swore fealty to the Lyran Commonwealth, as opposed to the joint monarchy of the Federated Commonwealth, or the later breakaway Lyran Alliance.
This cemented her as a possible supporter when Katherine took the Lyran state out of the FedCom...an impression that proved incorrect on at least a couple of fronts, namely that Elizabeth eschewed swearing loyalty to any single ruler of the Lyran Commonwealth, citing the treaty of annexation signed on Kowloon in the aftermath of the Amaris War. When Victor declared war in 3062, Elizabeth Ngo refused to become involved with either side, at one point even being quoted as viewing the conflict in terms of a 'Sibling squabble'.
During the FedCom Civil War, Kowloonese factories produced spare parts and munitions (*limited spares, as their standardization prohibited servicing the vast number of types used in LAAF and AFFC regulars units, though she was able to supply ample amounts of munitions to feed the guns) for the units on the Clan border, sometimes violating Archon directed embargoes to provide ammunition and what spares she could to AFFC and LAAF units facing Clan aggression without regard for those units' loyalty to either of the Steiner-Davion royals.
"Our first priority must be to preserve and defend the realm, any other priority will leave no realm for the spoiled brats to fight over." (this, naturally, did little to endear her to either faction.)
During this time period, Elizabeth's notoriety increased when she 'returned' the heads of eleven of Hopper Morrison's 'mechwarriors to him through intermediaries, along with a nice recording of those men dying on the cross. "Stay Away." This, and the appearance of patrol vessels from Kowloon, began reducing piracy along the periphery border significantly, but her attack on Pirates was more than just enhanced patrols and gruesome punishments.
In the height of the Steiner-Davion civil War, Elizabeth instituted and generated a program of providing shipyard services, technical inspections, and financial loans and relief to independent and unaffiliated shippers-the kind that often have to take Bandit or Pirate contracts to survive-in an effort to make legitimate traffic more lucrative and safer than accepting contracts from criminals. Thousands of single-ship companies found their ability to pay off their mortgages and maintain their vessels radically improved, this in turn began to drive an increase in commercial traffic and attendant benefits to worlds within 60 light years of Kowloon.
It also undercut the influence of the Lyran central government and various banks beholden to House Steiner, effectively crippling Regent Nondi Steiner's ability to inflict economic penalties on worlds that refused to toe the Kathrinist line. In 3065, Nondi Steiner put Elizabeth Ngo on the blacklist.
Assassination attempts followed within days after.
During this period, Elizabeth Ngo entered stage 2 of Cholmann's syndrome, and shifted from relatively mild painkillers to the ones they use drug-dogs to find in your baggage at the airport, and began shooting Denex, a potent anti-seizure medication twice a day.
The Jade Falcon Intervenes[]
During the Civil War, there was the Jade Falcon offensive of 3063, which shifted slightly to take some aim at Kowloon. Duchess Ngo's stalwart support of units on the Jade Falcon front (including units in bad odor with the hierarchy on Tharkad) made the system a target, and Falcon forces moved out of their initial planned route of advance to hit that world.
The fighting was remarkably light, perhaps due to the difficult astrogation problems posed by a binary star system with a stable jump limit sitting more than two weeks from the main inhabited planet at closest approach. The Falcon Incursion was unable to secure the system, but the leader of the force sent was a remarkably persistent man and so managed to secure the Hue region as an Enclave, and to win the right to maintain and support it.
This remarkably clever fellow, was named Nathan Roshak, a Trueborn, Bloodnamed Crusader.
Bizarrely, the final result of this, would be the 3067 marriage between Duchess Elizabeth Ngo, and Star Colonel Nathan Roshak.
It also resulted in a later-upheld treaty agreement, the un-remarked little sister of the Blair Atholl accords known as "The Kowloon Protocols", turning Kowloon into a commercial link between the Jade Falcon Clan and Lyran markets.
Jade Falcon medical scientists in 3067 managed to develop a curative treatment for Cholmann's Syndrome, and applied it to Duchess Ngo. Thus gaining a bit of prestige over competing Clans both in the Inner Sphere and Clan Homeworlds, by achieving something no other Clan has-a viable treatment for one of the six 'incurables'.
Elizabeth would become pregnant that same year, and give birth to a pair of twins.
Jihad Era[]
During the Word of Blake's Jihad (beginning in 3067) Kowloonese 'Coast Guard' ships, (see: [[Sampan III Class Cutter (WarShip)|Sampan III-Class Cutter) filled a critical gap in Lyran Commonwealth forces in terms of providing a mobile, space-based reconaissance and screening force. Kowloon's Boojum Shipyard also produced Invader, Merchant, and a version of the Star Lord class JumpShips for use by LCN and LCAF forces. The yard in doing so began to fill in a void left with the destruction of Alarion. The initial version of the Landmark-class Destroyers was also developed to fill holes in the LCN's roster. The Coast Guard trained crews moved into LCN billets with Coast Guard ships, making the Lyran Commonwealth Navy the most capable Inner Sphere navy in existence by 3077. This also was factor enabling the defeat of the Word of Blake without aid from Chandresekhar's Coalition (Devlin Stone's coalition). During this time, Elizabeth Ngo wore an added hat.
As Secretary of the Navy under her term of office (beginning in late 3068) she organized and regularized the LCN from a formation of transports for the ground forces of the LCAF with a few token warships, into a functional, aggressive, strategic and tactical Navy capable of executing commerce interdiction, blockade, pursuit, and reconnaissance missions across a wide front at an aggressive pace...while still providing the traditional taxi services to the LCAF and also providing convoy and route security.
Securing Terra, 3077-3078[]
Archon Peter Steiner-Davion accepted and agreed to the offer to participate in Operation:Scour, the invasion of Terra and the reduction of the Word of Blake. The day after, Elizabeth Ngo resigned her civilian position to accept commission at the rank of "Commander" to serve as a staff officer in planning the LCN's role in this mission. She leveraged contacts among the independent spacer community to obtain intelligence, and sent a mission to contact the Belters in the sol system under Lt. Commander Nicole Minh, a Sol-Belt native whom had served in the Coast Guard and later LCN as liaison. The intelligence provided by these actions caused her to break with traditional protocol and devise an entirely different strategy from that chosen by coalition leader Devlin Stone.
Thus, when the attack was launched, a much larger Lyran fleet was sent. This fleet focused primarily on liberating Belt and outer planets settlements, including the Metis Coalition, from the grip of the Word of Blake's Bureau of Terran Affairs. This force also deployed a weapon two weeks prior, code-named 'Crowbar' to reduce Blakist fortifications and installations throughout the Sol system. Crowbar was a kinetic kill system delivering payloads ranging from 20 to 50 tons at between 50% and 75% of light speed against fixed fortifications, and fortified facilities on Earth, Luna, Mars, and other locations throughout the Sol system. Over the course of this timed bombardment, most of the Brian fortresses and other fortified, non-mobile SDS facilities were eliminated entirely, including the fortified bunker under the city of Geneva, where the control nexus for the Terran 'Spoilsport' nuclear arsenal was located.
This eliminated all but one of the Brian Fortresses located on Earth. The last one, at Nellis which was too close to a major tectonic faultline was therefore left for conventional means of attack to reduce.
Elizabeth was then arrested and brought to trial for war crimes by the victorious leaders of the Coalition, citing violations of the Ares conventions. She would spend nearly a year incarcerated and would only be released after being officially acquitted after a lengthy trial in which questions regarding the actual intent of Operation Scour were raised with the public.
She returned to her homeworld and focused on her children's accomplishments for the remainder of the 3070s and 3080s, only occasionally being involved on the Lyran National Stage twice; once, as a consultant to Adam Steiner (when he became the Archon) and again, briefly, to argue against expanded trade relations with the Republic of the Sphere, during which she snubbed the Republic's ambassador at a public function in 3082.
