BattleTech Fanon Wiki

Crowe's Bloody Buccaneers was an Inner Sphere mercenary command formed at the tail end of the Third Succession War, originally by Walter Vandrel as Vandrel's Buccaneers. Under the leadership of Vandrel, the outfit made a respectable name for itself during its first few decades, coming to comprise more than a full BattleMech company by 3018, when Vandrel was killed in the Battle of Ensirion. Rather than dissolve, the Buccaneers decided to offer Bayard Crowe, a young MechWarrior of the 22nd Avalon Hussars who placed his career on the line to help aid the Buccaneers during the battle and ultimately saved them from outright total destruction, a place as their new commander. Crowe accepted, changing the name of the outfit with the Mercenary Review Board to Crowe's Bloody Buccaneers to reflect both the change in leadership and the losses they had suffered.

Under Bayard's leadership the Buccaneers flourished, gaining an impressive degree of fame and renown in just a few short decades. By the outbreak of the Clan Invasion, the Bloody Buccaneers comprised nearly two entire BattleMech battalions as its main force along with an assortment of security forces and a small army of support personnel, and by the start of the FedCom Civil War would even possess several JumpShips. While Bayard would retire from command of the outfit at the Clan Invasion's end in 3052, the Bloody Buccaneers would continue on over the next century, passing down command to the eldest Crowe descendant each time leadership has changed hands, with each inheritor proving to be a capable leader and MechWarrior in their own right.

Unfortunately, the Buccaneers would suffer greatly during the Jihad. While the Buccaneers would not join the Allied Mercenary Command, mostly thanks to having minimal affairs in the Chaos March, Halvorson Crowe would nevertheless align himself against the Word of Blake after witnessing his father Bayard's death at the hands of Blakist invaders during their brazen attack on New Avalon in December of 3067. Like the AMC in the preceding years, this would paint a target on the backs of the Buccaneers, and the Blakists would hire mercenaries of their own to target and harass the company. While the Buccaneers would survive the conflict, they would be reduced to roughly half the strength they possessed at its outset by the end.

Halvorson would do his best to rebuild the Bloody Buccaneers back up after the Blakists were defeated, and retired himself in 3096, passing on leadership to his own son, Greyson. Times would become difficult once again, however, as the Republic of the Sphere did its best to starve out much of the Inner Sphere's mercenary business, and lower-paying peacekeeping and policing contracts would gradually come to be the bread and butter of the Buccaneers' business during these years. To maintain profitability, Greyson would reluctantly downsize the company significantly, but he would also look to Clan Sea Fox, who over the decades prior had become increadingly eager to do business with the Inner Sphere. By doing odd jobs and helping to market the Clan's products and services to other mercenary outfits, the Buccaneers were able to curry favor with the Sea Foxes, which they would then use to secure better rates on their own transactions with the Clan. This in turn allowed the Buccaneers to become increasingly flush with high-end Clan technology, allowing them to slowly build up a small core cadre of elite forces with top-of-the-line equipment to dedicate towards taking on more dangerous and better-paying high-profile contracts with which to supplement their usual peacekeeping work.

In 3132, the Inner Sphere's hyperpulse generator faster-than-light communications grid would be sabotaged by an unknown force in an event that came to be known as the Blackout, plunging the Inner Sphere into the Dark Age. Thankfully, the A-class HPG on the Buccaneer's base world of operations, Goderich, would not be among those affected, allowing them to fare better than many in this new era. The turmoil caused by the Blackout would also ignite new conflicts across the Inner Sphere, revitalizing the mercenary trade as these conflicts made contracts plentiful once more. Even so, the Buccaneers continued their dealings with Clan Sea Fox, even as cracks slowly forming in their relationship as the more liberally-minded Buccaneers increasingly clashed with the authoritarian nature of the Sea Foxes' Clan culture. But the Buccaneers' abundance of Clan technology would nevertheless continue to help them further solidify themselves as being among some of the premier mercenaries of the southeastern Inner Sphere, and so by the late 3140s reducing the company's reliance upon Clan Sea Fox to supply this technology had become one of the Buccaneers' major business objectives.

Colors & Heraldry[]

As Vandrel's Buccaneers, the company's standard BattleMech heraldry consisted of a pale brown base with stone grey markings. When rebranding the outfit as the Bloody Buccaneers, Bayard Crowe had the grey replaced with a vibrant, arterial blood red. The arrangement and placement of the markings was left up to the preference of the individual MechWarrior, subject to the approval of administrative-level staff. Later on, this policy would be extended to aerospace fighters and battle armor.

Lance commanders were permitted to use two shades of red as well as more extensive markings, once again subject to the approval of administrative staff. Bayard also chose to allow members of his personal command lance to mark their BattleMechs in this fashion, and this tradition would be carried on by his successors.

Finally, company and squadron commanders were permitted to add white markings.
