Description[]
Reality? a Omake style short story based on the Blue Squadron (Battletech x KanColle(ish) crossover) mainstory. It is a Apocrypha story, which is non-canon (didn't happen). A silly story.
Story[]
"This one wasn't too good." Brest remarked when she packed away the comic she had finished reading.
"Better or worse than the last one?" La Plata replied conversationally. The dark-haired woman was keeping an eye out for trouble while Amber was asleep next to her.
"Eh." Brest made a so-so gesture and drew the next one from her cargo bay pocket.
Chuckling, La Plata gave Brest an indulgent look. "Chances are that's the last one you'll need to read to pass the time."
"Hope so." The planned patrol Swift and Silver had gone on was scheduled to be over just about now, the brunette thought. She spared a glance at the standard jump-points before burying her nose into the book in her hands.
Space was calm and quiet for a while.
"Whoa."
Something behind Brest had caught La Plata's attention.
The brunette turned to see as well. Her mouth fell open when she did. "What the heck?"
It was like something out of a trivid. Impossibly, bolts of purple lightning were cracking through space. They were magnitudes larger than even the most powerful known discharges in gas-giants' atmospheres.
Glancing to the side, Brest exchanged a look with La Plata. The tanned woman's shrug answered the brunette's wordless question.
Spellbound by the spectacle the two fleetmaidens watched on for a short while, before the patterns of purple lightning changed and became concentrated in one area of the void.
An instant later something Brest had never seen before happened, and judging by the Dart's exclamation next to her La Plata had not either. It seemed as though a, for lack of better word, hole or tear in space had appeared. It was many kilometers across and every time Brest blinked it alternated between spilling a sickly purple glow into the system, and an indescribable blackness which blotted out the background-stars.
Before the Fox could even attempt to comprehend what she was seeing something more immediate drew her attention. Two ships had come out of the rend in space close to them.
"What?"
"Exactly."
It was the rest of their unit. Swift and Silver had apparently used it to travel, since Brest had not sensed any emergence-signatures.
On an approach-vector as they were, the returning cruiser and corvette were close enough to see them properly a minute later.
"Must have met our friends." La Plata muttered, gaze on the flagship.
Brest agreed. She could see a dark patch in Swift's face. She had to have gotten hit.
Though, as Aegis and Peregrine were on final approach, the brunette realised that it was not a scorch-mark but something else. Some kind of tattoo?
Subconsciously leaning forward to see better, the Fox was certain. Swift had a geometric form painted on her hull around her left eye. It was a circle with eight arrows pointing out of it.
Opening her mouth to greet the two returnees, and of course ask about their unusual arrival, the words got stuck in Brest's throat when Swift and Silver opened fire. Yet what was hurled forth from their guns was unlike any weapon Brest had ever seen.
Their targets didn't stand a chance. La Plata got hit before she even knew what was happening. The tanned woman was still smiling in welcome when what looked like red and purple energies engulfed her. A moment later her hull was alight, melting and breaking apart the light faded from her eyes while she was burning from the inside.
Amber suffered the same fate. Asleep as she was, she never even knew what happened to her. Maybe it was better this way.
Apparently happy with what they had wrought the two traitors turned to approach Brest, yet they did not fire.
It gave the brunette girl a moment, yet she could not use it for anything. She was petrified with horror and surprise.
The moment passed and they were within grappling distance. Brest's eyes, filled with fear, were drawn to Silver who had exchanged her standard colour-scheme for a combination of crimson and brass. The green-haired corvette returned Brest's look with a savage expression, lips drawn in a silent snarl and rage in her violet eyes.
Swift was merely smiling. It was not the cruiser's understated yet kind smile, though. It was too broad for that. Cold and cruel, it revealed that the woman had too many teeth, which were also much pointier and sharper than they should be. When the Aegis didn't say anything and her sadistic smile widened, Brest froze entirely. Reaching out with a hand that had an unhealthy colour and visible black veins running along its length, Swift grasped the completely immobile brunette girl by the throat and drew her closer.
Hurt and confused by the betrayal Brest was at a loss for words. She searched the grey-haired woman's eyes for answers to questions she could not voice. She wished she had not.
Pure evil was looking out of those familiar eyes at her. Terror sent a deathly chill up Brest's spine when she realized that she was not dealing with the woman she used to know.
Brest wanted nothing more than to get away from the thing which had her in a stranglehold. Yet she still could not move at all. Unable to even avert her eyes from the malevolent gaze of what had once been her superior and role-model boring into her very soul, her head hurt as though red-hot nails were scratching the inside of her skull. She wanted to scream with pain, fright and horror, yet no sound came out of her throat. She tried again, to no avail.
The beast wearing Swift's skin enjoyed the fear in the girl's eyes. Its malevolent smile turned into a rictus of sadistic glee, and it began to squeeze. For a few moments Brest's hull and bulkheads groaned throat held on before they buckled blackness took her.
Bolting upright with a scream stuck in her throat, Brest reflexifely loaded her guns and called her crew to battle-stations went into a combat-stance. Disoriented and confused she was looking around herself frantically.
"Brest?"
There was a voice from behind her. On frightened reflex she whirled around and pointed her guns at the speaker.
"Are you alright?"
A beat and Brest deflated with a shaky exhale.
"I'll take that as a no." La Plata was obviously concerned and carefully coming closer.
"Just a nightmare." Brest rasped and ran a trembling hand through her hair.
"Must've been a bad one." A dark eyebrow rose.
"Yeah. Wasn't fun." Brest breathed deeply in and out several times in an attempt to get her frazzled nerves under control.
"You didn't eat anything before you went to sleep, did you? I warned you about that, nanodesu."
Brest appreciated her friend's good intentions when Amber joined the conversation, but at that moment she had to exert conscious effort not to make a snappy reply. "No. I think I'll never sleep again regardless."
Amber and La Plata exchanged a glance. "Want to talk about it?"
"No."
"Allright, no pressure."
Feeling bad for being so curt while Amber and La Plata were concerned for her, Brest felt the need to explain herself. "I'll be fine once Swift and Silver are back."
"You probably won't need to wait long. They're due to arrive anytime now." La Plata turned, seemingly intent on giving Brest space to calm down.
As if on cue purple lightning started cracking through the blackness of space behind La Plata and Amber, before reality tore open.
Brest's eyes went wide with terror.
